The Big Fat Bloated 3rd Birthday Audio Review + Now With Video!

My brothers and I got together last weekend to talk about something that’s been on our minds: The 3rd Birthday, the Parasite Eve series and what Square has been up to in general lately.

It was our first night together since Christmastime, so we were excited as hell to talk about this, and well, we started recording around 10 at night and we stopped around 2 in the morning.

So. We talk a lot! About a lot of things!

We cover the game with a fine-tooth comb from beginning to end, with plenty of (non-boring) tangents related to many other games (Resident Evil, Mass Effect, Illusion of Gaia, etc.) and ideas (sci-fi and art, etc.).

I was worried it’d be a rambling mess, but it’s kind of organic and coherent! Give it a listen why don’t you!

The 3rd Birthday – Late-Term Abortion

Aya's sick

First Samus Aran, now Aya Brea. In Parasite Eve and Parasite Eve 2, the former NYPD detective kicked monsters up the Bronx and down the Battery with her mitochondrial super powers and customizable weaponry. Now, in The 3rd Birthday she’s kept locked in a prison cell and only let out to get her clothes ripped off.

How the mighty have fallen.

The same could be said for developer Square, which disappointed the entire damn world Internet for their recent Final Fantasy games, not to mention the Final Fantasy games stuck in development hell and Final Fantasy games with goofy titles. Square and I had our run-ins in the past (I like Final Fantasy VII just fine, by the way, did that not come across?), and I’ve defended them many times before (Final Fantasy: 4 Heroes of Light is a damn good time), but that gets difficult when something like The 3rd Birthday comes along.

Announced way back in 2007 for Japanese cell phones, it made the leap to PSP in 2008 before landing with a thud here in the present. That’s an awful long time, longer when you consider Parasite Eve 2 came out in the year 2000. So, it’s been a decade. And this is what we get.

(Performance Review) The 3rd Birthday – Aya the Body Snatcher

Cinematic Sultry Advertising Action-RPG Parasite Eve is a favorite of mine, as its wintry New York setting and bizarro sci-fi tale spoke directly to my tastes. So upon hearing its new PSP iteration, The Third Birthday, would be a third-person shooter I couldn’t help but fret. Square Enix’ last notable shooter was Dirge of Cerberus for the PS2. Yeah.

After some time with Aya Brea’s new adventure at a Sony video game showcase in NYC yesterday, I can shed my fears slightly. I wasn’t blown away by it, but I wasn’t underwhelmed either. I managed to jump into the game and get used to the controls immediately. They’re very easy, simpler than Peace Walker or Monster Hunter, though similar to both.

Dreams do come true

First Duke Nukem Forever, now Mega Man Legends 3. All we need left is Half-Life 2: Episode 3, Shenmue 3 and ZOE3 … and life will be complete.

So, how about that Keiji Inafune special interview? Did you like that?

As you can see, Inafune is very enthusiastic about this project. And that new development style that he said he would go into more detail about later, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed by that. We think not only fans of the series, but anyone interested in Mega Man Legends will be like, “What? …OMG!!!”

When I and the rest of the staff first heard that were that we were doing this, we were shaking in our boots. All of us were asking our bosses, “Are you guys serious?”

But the proposition was interesting to say the least. So, now here we are making intense preparations and trying to stay on schedule.

…Having said that, there are so many details about the project that I am dying to tell all of you… but you’ll have to wait and let your imaginations run wild for just a little longer, until the Comic Con in New York next month!

Until then, I’ll use this blog to introduce to members of my team, and tell you a little about what’s going on here in the Dev Lab. I’ll do my best to update it at least once a week, so check back often!

I’m also looking forward to hearing comments from all of you!

(grump alert) Mega Man Legends III – Finally Upon Us?

PS1 cult classics Mega Man Legends, Mega Man Legends 2 and their spin-off The Misaventures of Tron Bonne may finally get a sequel if a mysterious trail of tweets, innuendo and seemingly unrelated news are anything to believe.

Developer Capcom, primarily Mega Man co-creator Keiji Inafune, has been teasing us with the promise of a Mega Man Legends III for a decade now, since MML2 ended on a cliffhanger back in the year 2000. So we’ve been going “Yeah, yeah, sure, Capcom” and brushing any promise off as cruel playful teasing. Yet these latest developments set the Nets ablaze with new hope, and as a fan of the Mega Man Legends world I feel like I need to stoke the flames.

This link here provides the initial burst of new-found promise:

Hideki Kamiya, former director to some of Capcom’s biggest games, knows something we don’t know about Mega Man Legends. In a series of back-and-forth Tweets, Kamiya is teasing fans of the series that they will pleased with something coming down the pike. The first tweet is as follows (UPDATE: a much more accurate translation provided by TMMN):

“Oh, finally, I was introduced to Capcom’s Kawano-san today, who was also the maker of Rockman DASH. But when I told him the wish to “make a sequel to DASH” from a certain person, he gave me some sort of grin… If it’s good it’s good I suppose… Goodnight.”

“Just wait and see.”

..and then, in a followup Tweet:

“If you’re Dash fan, you’ll be happy soon.”

and another, in response to the tweet, “Don’t toy with our hearts like that Kamiya-san!”:

“…you gotta believe Kawano san!”

Here’s two more Tweets of interest to keep you on edge. The first tweet is in response to “Kamiya-san Why must you toy with our emotions? We NEED Dash 3”, to which Kamiya said:

“All I can tell is just wait!”

and the second, a response to “No Dash 3 at all, huh?”

“Just wait and see.”

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game – A Baller Brawler

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game is about a Canadian 23-year-old named Scott Pilgrim who, along with his pals Kim Pine, Stephen Stills, and new girlfriend Ramona Flowers, must defeat Ramona’s seven evil ex-boyfriends before Scott can finally date her. A simple premise explained to us, if not by the absolute media overload of the past few weeks, then by the Marvel vs. Capcom 2-style attract demo that plays when the game boots up. Scott: The Game is a classic-style arcade game, calling back to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in TimeThe Simpsons Arcade Game and other classic brawlers, particularly River City Ransom.

Both Scott and River City Ransom have enemies that drop coins when defeated, shops both apparent and hidden where you can buy food and items that increase stats, punching, kicking, and  jumping. There’s also an indelible charm you can’t resist — unless you don’t like fun, nostalgia and gorgeous, gorgeous sprite work.

E3 Day One: Stranger in a Strange Land

For someone who grew up seeing E3 through the pages of EGM and later through the web pages of IGN you’d think it’d be a dream come true to actually be there at the Candyland of video games. Well, let me tell ya. It was an exhausting, mind numbing experience. Sensory overload the likes of which I’ve rarely seen, felt, smelled, touched or heard. Remember that episode of Batman Beyond where the bad guy goes deaf from the all the sounds of the city piercing his brain all at once and he screams in agony from it all?

Sorry, I got Batman Beyond on the mind since that Splice review. Great show.

But anyway, that was me. For three days! Surrounded by sweating nerds, servile booth babes and sycophantic industry types in a bombed out section of L.A. no one wants to be in, except for this one giant convention. Seriously, otherwise the place is a ghost town, which is a very weird (and scary) place to be in coming from New York friggin’ City.

Not that any of that matters really. E3 is about one thing: games. Lots and lots of games. And I got my grubby hands on all of them. Well, a lot of them. Not all of them. Off the bat I’ll say I missed Zelda: Skyward Sword, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Microsoft’s and Sony’s Wii-too nonsense. So if you’re looking for the umpteenth amount of armchair punditry for those — whoops. This is just one simple chump’s first visit to E3, trying to find something that wasn’t a derivative arm-waving simulator or a FPS about shooting foreigners.

But boy, does that Move controller look like a luminescent dildo or what?
